What Ration is

Ration turns what you eat into a read on your body. Log a meal and Ration estimates how it moves your hormones, energy, and sleep — the glucose, insulin, and cortisol response, and the liver-versus-muscle glycogen split behind them. Every estimate is traced to measured composition from USDA laboratory data and the compound and mechanism research most nutrition tools omit — oxalate, phytate, purine, heavy-metal, and bioactive levels — each value carrying its citations and a confidence grade.

Rankings and comparisons are computed directly from those measurements, never hand-picked. Where a food has not been measured, Ration shows a dash instead of a guess.

Why it exists

Most nutrition tools stop at calories and macros. But whether a food works for you also depends on what else is in it, and on how preparation changes that. Knowing spinach is high in oxalate is only useful if you also know boiling removes a measured share of it. Ration exists to connect that hidden layer — what is actually in your food and what it does inside you — to how you feel: your energy, your sleep, your afternoon crash.

Who makes it

Ration is built by a small independent team, founded by Spencer Hochhaus. Data work follows the sourcing and correction practices in our editorial policy: laboratory data from USDA FoodData Central, compound values from published research, and a medical-review byline only when a credentialed reviewer has actually reviewed the piece.
