What actually works for sleep

Tart cherry and L-theanine have the most human sleep data, and L-theanine's evidence is a bit more consistent. Magnesium has weaker, more mixed support.

A 28 day randomized, placebo-controlled trial using a branded L-theanine supplement in adults with moderate stress found improvements in sleep along with reduced stress, and no meaningful side effects.[14]

The effect sizes across these trials tend to be modest, not dramatic.

L-theanine seems to help some people sleep a little better, especially those dealing with stress or anxiety, rather than fixing insomnia outright.[7]

Does tart cherry help you sleep?

Tart cherry juice and extract contain melatonin, anthocyanins, and other plant compounds. The theory is that these compounds support the body's natural sleep-wake cycle.

A 2025 systematic review focused specifically on tart cherry and sleep found some evidence that it can shorten the time it takes to fall asleep and increase total sleep time in certain groups, including older adults with insomnia.[11] But the review also noted that many trials are small, short, and use different doses and cherry products, which makes the findings hard to generalize.[11]

Other claimed benefits of tart cherry look weaker under scrutiny.

A 2026 randomized crossover trial found tart cherry juice had no acute effect on uric acid, blood vessel function, or inflammation markers.[2] A larger 2026 meta-analysis of tart cherry and uric acid reached a similar conclusion, finding no consistent effect.[5]

A position stand from the International Society of Sports Nutrition on dietary antioxidants, including tart cherry, found support for reducing muscle soreness after exercise but did not point to strong sleep specific benefits as a primary effect.[3]

What about magnesium and other sleep supplements?

Magnesium is often recommended for sleep, especially around menopause.

A 2024 systematic review of nutritional interventions for menopause related sleep disturbances looked at magnesium along with other nutrients and found some signals of benefit, but the overall body of evidence was small and inconsistent.[12]

A broader 2025 critical review of supplements for healthy aging noted that many popular sleep and recovery nutrients, including magnesium, lack large, well-controlled trials in older adults, even though they are widely used.[6]
