The benzoate and vitamin C problem

One combination is worth calling out.

When sodium benzoate is present alongside added vitamin C (ascorbic acid), the two can react to form small amounts of benzene, a known carcinogen, especially with heat and light.[1] Some energy drinks contain both.

If a label lists both sodium benzoate and ascorbic acid, that is a reason to choose a different product.
